Road Trip Entry No.11:
We arrived at Big Bend and set up camp in the Chisos Mountains Basin Campground and were greeted by three Deer. What an amazing place and by far the best car camping I've ever seen. Driving into the park made me feel more excited than a kid in a car approaching Canada's Wonderland. We enjoyed the surrounding view as much as we could while trying to cook dinner and set up our tents before it got dark. The sunset was spectacular and the entire scene became saturated by changing hues.
Suddenly out of nowhere, the winds picked up and came howling down the mountains. Most of our things were already packed away but what was left was being swept away by the increasing winds. As I scrambled to gather the rest of our stuff, the pole of my tent snapped and caused the entire tent to collapse and pierce a lovely hole in the fly. Unimpressed by my tent and a suddenly quite nervous I managed repair the tent and move into a more strategic position. I sacrificed the fly to use its pole to splice the broken one and opened all the screens of the tent so the wind passed through the tent instead of blowing it down and snapping another pole. I remained quite edgy since we were now exposed to the elements and a thunderstorm was moving directly for us. I could not sleep while in the tent as it constantly buckled in the wind but I finally got about 2 hours in after climbing into the car when I noticed the clouds were beginning to engulf us.
What you see is Casa Grande Peak with the clouds lit up by the approaching thunderstorm. I actually sat there with my tripod holding the shutter open for 4 entire minutes. It never did rain since the storm had to work its way around the enormity of the mountains. It was quite the memorable night.

You forgot to mention how after the tent was repaired and moved I spent the entire night in a perfect slumber while you, Marc, and Krista fretted about the potential storm the whole night. What a blissful night it was.

Corrie forgot to mention that she slept great because she took a sleeping pill. Even considering that, I still can't believe she slept through it all.
