We are on our way to the Boquillas Canyon trail in Big Bend National Park. We stop at one of the lookouts where you can see Boquillas Village. You can no longer legally cross the border here since 9/11 and this little town that once thrived as a tourist attraction has been devastated. The Mexicans remain and ask the tourists from across the Rio Grande to help them send their children to school by 'making a donation' and helping yourself to one of the beautiful handcrafted walking sticks, wire scorpions, or painted rocks. The local authorities strongly advise you to stay away and it is a serious offence to purchase anything from them. As we absorb the scenery and desert heat we notice a horse lay on it's side flanking the river. His owner arrives and he cannot get up. We don't know the full story but we are certain this horse is dying. His owner tries to help the horse up but must leave him. There is nothing we can do.

You can bring a horse to water but you can't force it to drink... or stay alive I guess.
